Moisturiser is my absolute favourite skincare product. No matter what I’ve done to my skin due to stress, fatigue, makeup, pimple squeezing or anything else, moisturiser seems to erase all of that.
I know it doesn’t actually erase everything. But it FEELS like it does.
Still, moisturiser has rules. Doesn’t everything? You can’t just slap it on like you’re using concrete to lay bricks or filling holes with putty before a rental inspection.
Sorry to be the one to tell you guys, but you’ve been moisturising wrong.
Here’s how you should be doing it.
1. Do you even use moisturiser?
I didn’t use moisturiser for about a decade because I had such oily and pimply skin that there didn’t seem to be a point. I was so focused on drying my skin out and keeping it less oily that it never occurred to me that moisturiser was actually very important to keeping oil and pimples at bay.
I know, it doesn’t sound like it makes sense, even today, but the truth is that skin is a tricky thing and if you deprive it of moisture it is going to act a little nutty in an attempt to keep hydrated by producing more oil, which is the last thing you want.
So, I avoided moisturiser for years and then I started using a ‘moisturiser’ only to realise years later that the serum I thought was moisturiser wasn’t moisturiser at all. I was missing an entire step.
I was so confused.
So lesson one is to check your products and make sure you have an actual moisturiser in your arsenal, because so many of us don’t.

The only other thing I would add is that you might need different moisturisers for winter than you do for summer. I turn into a scaly seabeast in winter, so I need something heavier. In summer, I need something with a decent SPF that is light and absorbs quickly.
I read recently that sorbolene is one of the best moisturisers you can use in terms of combatting fine lines - just cheap ol' Sorbolene. My favourites are Ponds Dry Skin Cream, Palmers Daily Moisturising Lotion and Eucerin Anti-Redness Night Cream. All of them are reasonably cheap, too. I believe Eucerin Aquaphor is the summit of saviours when it comes to scaly and painful dryness, so if that's something you suffer from it's good to keep on hand - also used for nappy rash, so if you have a bub it could be a win-win.
I work in the beauty industry and most moisturisers that are sold in department stores have the same ingrediances
The next level of moisturisers with active ingrediances AHA and vitamin A that are sold through dermatologists and doctors are more powerful however can easily cause damage if over used or not used in the correct way ie; staying out of the sun while using
The only proven thing that will make a difference to your skin is SPF and not smoking
Your skin is actually made to not need any moisturiser... The whole skin care sell is bullshit to suck us women in to spending money
Eat well, keep hydrated and stay out of the sun... Occasionally use a Vitamin e cream like Macro if you feel dry and exfoliate once a month to get rid of excess dead skin but don't play in to all the bull about these products
Botox does much more for preventing wrinkles that any of these creams put together
I found that botox made my skin feel different and look older. Unfortunately I need it for medical reasons.
