Bananas. Part 2.

My banana scandal certainly seems to have pressed some buttons and comments continue to pour in (you can read the post and billion comments here) . A special shout-out to Lee who wrote an essay on the subject.
I thought I should respond to a couple of points that have been raised in the comments.

Firstly, let me clarify something about the way work experience works in a big office: the staff who provide the tasks for the Workies (as we called them) are usually the most junior people in the office.
Accomodating work experience students takes a lot of extra time and energy for whoever is managing them. This is on top of their regular workload and it's something the Workies are rarely aware of.

So all this talk about work experience doing "unpaid labour" needs to be put in the context of the "unpaid labour" done by whomever is responsible for looking after them, answering their questions, setting them tasks, supervising the completion of these tasks (and often having to re-do them) and trying to ensure they have a pleasant, educative experience in their chosen workplace.

Nup, not me.

So. There's a book called "Boned" that's due to be released in June. It's being billed by its publisher as: "A wickedly entertaining novel that blows the lid off the world of network television".

The PR hook is that the book is by "Anonymous' which is a gift to the media who can now spend weeks speculating as to who "Anonymous" might be. I woke up this morning to the sound of my name being tossed around on radio as a possible author and now I'm listed by the Tele here as one of two prime suspects

It's not me. I put my name to everything I write.

Also? The book's publicist states that 'Anonymous" still works in the TV industry. I don't.

As it happens, I am writing a book at the moment. It will be released next April and it's about my experiences with pregnancy and motherhood, not network television.

Maybe Humphrey B. Bear wrote Boned. He has my vote.

Kevin is heaven.....

Symbolic … Mr Rudd and Ms Bryce. "It is obvious that we needed to have a governor-general … who captures the spirit of modern Australia," Mr Rudd said yesterday.
[source: sydney morning herald]

Since I voted for Kevin in 07, he has not disappointed me. Since becoming our Prime Minister he has apologised to the stolen generation and given us our first female deputy prime minister in the fabulous Julia Gillard.

Then, on his first prime ministerial trip overseas, he told George Bush that Australia wants to pull troops out of Iraq, told the Queen we want to become a republic and told China that their human rights record in Tibet is appalling. Gutsy.

Now, he has appointed a fabulous woman, Quentin Bryce as our first female Governor General. You can read about Quentin after the jump. She is an extraordinary woman and a superb role model for women and, in fact, all Australians.

Go Kevin. You're making me proud.

As opposed to your predecessor who - every time he went overseas - made me embarrassed because all he seemed to do was grovel to world leaders and wear appalling tracksuits in public like this......

New beginings.....

Well, it's been quite a week. Deciding to leave Channel 9 was never going to really fly under the radar, was it? Perhaps that's been my biggest lesson in the year I spent working in TV: even behind-the-scenes minutiae makes news. I'm not planning on rabbiting on about what went down or why or how. If you're interested, the subject is pretty well covered here.

I've been working on this blog for a while, loading in a bunch of my favourite columns that I've written for the Sun Herald and Sunday Age as well as some magazine features.
I'll continue to post columns here after they've been published but I'll also be writing new posts.

So welcome, have a look around, bookmark this page, sign up to subscribe if you feel that way inclined. I used to have a website but websites are, like, sooo 2005. So I euthanased it and gave birth to mamamia.

I'm going to take a few days to settle in to my new non-office life and then I'll be posting very regularly.
