The older I get, the less inclined I am to buy into new fashion trends (Birkenstocks notwithstanding, ok?) so I’m always happy to see a trend resurgence that I already have hanging in my wardrobe. Fashion Month – New York, London, Paris and Milan Fashion Week combined – has just wrapped up, and I’m happy to announce that one of the biggest trends this Spring / Summer is one I’m almost certain you own too. And even if you don’t, you can pick them up very cheaply from almost any chain store. Although, newish mothers might not be able to partake in this one.
Seen at BCBG Max Azia, Vionnet, Creatures of Comfort and Josie Natori to name a few designers, the ubiquitous white shirt is back. I spoke to Westfield Bondi Junction stylist Pip Cooks about how to make the trend work for you, here’s her tips and picks.
“The wardrobe staple becomes a season must-have with designers bringing back the white shirt this season adding their twist to the classic style. Runway interpretations have included fitted, sleeveless options at Vionnet and Christian Dior; pretty peasant styles and lace detailing at Chloe and Givenchy; cropped shirting and contrasting panels at Dsquared,” Cooks says.
1. Veronika Maine cotton drop shoulder shirt, $129.00
Don’t be afraid to try a cropped style shirt, this style sits on the hips and with sleeves makes it wearable for all ages.
BY DAY – achieve an easy lunch with friends” look by adding a printed skirt and simple slides.
BY NIGHT – a pleated metallic skirt, nude heels and statement earrings or necklace worn white shirt will really add the wow factor.
2. Country Road stripe bib shirt, $99.95
The contrasting bib fabric adds interest to this sleeveless cotton style. Perfect for those who like a classic tailored look.
BY DAY – wear with wide legged pants and white plimsole trainers for a classic Lauren Hutton style look.
BY NIGHT – team back with tuxedo pants, jacket and sky high heels and you’ll look effortlessly elegant for the evening.

Check the label - polycotton shirts (which some of those above are) are yuk. Pure crisp cotton or linen please!
Shirts: generally yuck on me- big bust so I look busty and/or boxy BUT I bought a denim-look chambray type from Big W and I love it! Yes, I had to get size 18 (even though I am a 10 in skirts!!) but it is so flattering. Loose but shaped. Looks great with maxi skirts or pencil skirts or over a longline tank with leggings. Seriously it is the most amazing shirt!
