10 tips for creating a Pinterest-worthy baby's room.

Pinterest is full of inspiration and creative ideas. But turning those ideas into reality, can be near impossible. Some of us just don’t have a knack for clever and creative design, even when it’s staring us in the face.

I am more of a Pinterest window shopper myself. I gaze enviously at other people’s brilliant designs and then go back to my dreary house without the motivation or energy to spruce it up.

Until I became a mum.

My children deserved better than orange curtains, beige carpet and furniture that didn’t match. I wanted to create a nursery I could be proud of. I wanted it to be a calm, clever, cute space and possibly the best room in the house.

So I graduated from being a Pinterest window shopper to a Pinterest user, and the results have been so good I feel like creating a board myself.

Here are my top tips for creating a Pinterest-worthy nursery:

1. Make sure all your furniture matches.

Once you have your floors and walls done you need to pick your furniture. Make sure it all matches. This is key. When the furniture matches it creates a blank canvas from which you can decorate. Choose unisex designs so you can use it for all your children.

Try and fit out your nursery from one location, because you’ll always find matching products and save time searching through lots of different retailers.

If you are using second-hand furniture or have furniture that doesn’t match, just paint it all a glossy white and it will look stunning. Nothing is cuter than white furniture in a nursery.

2. Looking after your baby never looked so good.

A nursery can look amazing but it still has to work really well for you and your baby.

With babies, the general rule to keeping them warm and healthy is to dress them in an extra layer than what you’re wearing. But that can be a bit hit and miss.

A nursery thermometer easily shows you what the temperature is in your child’s room so you can make sure it is optimal and minimise illness. Plus, they come in a range of colours that look amazing.

3. Once you find out what you are having, don’t be afraid to decorate accordingly.

Once you bring home your baby boy or girl you may be tempted to give in to your blue and pink decorating urges, and you should go for it. Choose one or two blankets that they can use when they’re older.

Because your room, furniture and linen is simple in design, one or two brighter choices will go really well in your new nursery.

4. One big toy in the nursery, and that’s all.

You don’t want to clutter up your nursery but you still want it to look fun and child-friendly. So once you’ve sorted your furniture and linen, choose one big toy as a decorative piece for your room.

When your children are older they will love playing with it but until then, it is for show only.

5. Canvas art is a must.

Choosing clever canvas art is a must for design purposes, because it really gives your nursery that Pinterest lift.

The great thing about canvas art is that it can really pop with colour and tie in the more decorative pieces in your room.

6. Choose linen that isn’t too complicated in its design.

Baby linen can be expensive so consider it just as much of an investment as the baby furniture. If you take care of it, it will last for years.

7. One play area only.

It’s a good idea to set up one little area in your child’s nursery where you can place them safely to play while you set up nappy changes or change the sheets in their cot. Because the rest of your nursery is neutral, this can be as colourful as you like.

8. You need a lamp.

When I first set up my baby’s nursery I remembered everything. I even remembered too many things, things I didn’t need at all.

But I forgot one important item.

I needed a lamp. A lamp is an easy way to check on your baby without flooding the room with light and is useful at night when you are doing a quick feed or a nappy change. And these days’ lamps are just as decorative as canvas art so choose a cute one that matches your design choices so far.

9. Make pillows fun.

Pillows are one of the simplest and most affordable ways to decorate a nursery and there are some brilliant choices. The great thing is they can join your baby as they get older and move to a bed.

10. Muslin wraps are your new best friend.

I hadn’t even heard of a Muslin wrap until I had my first child. Soon, my life revolved around them. Was it big enough? Was it clean? Did I have spares?

You’ll be so reliant on them for swaddling your baby and for discreet breastfeeding, for use in the pram to block out the sun or to signal nap time. You’ll grab whichever ones you can find. So make sure you choose cute ones that match your design.
