Last week, Julia Gillard came to visit the Mamamia office. Being visited by Australia’s first female PM is a pretty exciting thing, so we posted a picture to celebrate the occasion:
What we didn’t expect was the commentary that the photo immediately received.
Such as this tweet, which was prompted by a previous article Buzzfeed Australia did about the male-dominated workplace at Triple M:
Does @Mamamia only employ women? And will the @BuzzfeedOz report on it? pic.twitter.com/1P9fuN2uJz

Call it what you want. In my case, it was being told, by two different employers, that the reason I wasn't hired, was because I was a man. There were two many men employed and they needed a woman to even it out. I don't care if you're a man or woman, if you're better qualified or suited for he position, you get hired. End of discussion. Hiring based on gender is wrong either way. And unless you're going to go to every business and pull ever application and make a case for each employee that they were chosen over someone else based on gender, it's going to be hard to prove. All it does, throwing sexism around based on photos, is make employers hire people to fill a status quo.
Reverse Sexism is a poor worded term. The reverse of sexism would be equality. I believe a more accurate term would be Misandry (opposing Misogyny). Anyway a photograph with just women or men in it is not inherently sexist as it is not targeting any particular group. It's not like the photo has the comment of "Great day out, no stupid men/women/goats around to mess things up!"
Secondly so called 'Reverse Sexism' (referred to as misandry) is a problem and it is one that will continue to grow. And sadly there is little any woman or man can do about it.
There is a very delicate line between seeking equality, and seeking privilege for one gender over the other. I have seen many feminists who genuinely want equality. They're doing some good in the world.
Unfortunately, there are also many who cross the lines of 'equality' and seem intent on stamping out anything and everything related to men...
Sadly these people defend their actions with 'Misandry isn't a thing' and 'It's not sexist!'...
You can say that 'Reverse Sexism' doesn't exist... But it does.
