Former radio presenter Sammy Power married herself on Saturday night, in a lavish and glorious wedding featuring a ring bearer dressed as cat.
Power decided to marry herself to mark not only her 50th birthday, but also a year of major transformation that saw her lose more than half her body weight.
After quitting drinking and smoking a year ago, Sammy told The Daily Telegraph, “I feel mentally clear now — I wasted so much time thinking I was fat and obsessing over small things.’’
The wedding took place in Noosa and was attended by an interesting mix of 200 guests, including Rugby League great Darren Lockyer and former Big Brother announcer Mike Goldman. Guests were asked to dress ‘over the top’ and trophies were handed out to people who have played an important role in Power’s life.
The bride wore a yellow puff-sleeved gown straight from a Disney movie and the bridesmaids – her sisters – wore similar gowns in blue.
Although marrying oneself may seem like the ultimate gesture of giving up on love, Power insists that her wedding wasn’t about accepting that she’ll never find a man, but about celebrating herself and her newfound sense of self worth.
“I’ve never thought this before the wedding but I thought to myself, ‘You’re pretty great’,” she said.
“Yes, I’m going home alone but when the right person comes along, they are going to be with someone pretty amazing — I’m ready to meet the right person.”
And to that we say: BRAVO SAMMY POWER!
Let’s hope this kicks off an amazing trend of women falling head over heels in love with themselves and throwing weddings to prove it.
What do think about the idea of ‘marrying yourself’? Would you ever meet yourself at the alter?

Oh come on people! If you have ever listened to Sammy on the radio, or know her personally as I do, you will know humour underpins everything she does. While there is a self-empowerment message here that all women should be proud of, the 'marriage and divorce' part of her celebrations was meant to be a joke, not meant to be taken so seriously! She is quirky and larger than life and dances to the beat of her own drum, hooray for that! I admire and respect her for proudly embracing herself at her milestone and she inspires me to accept myself for all I am. Good on you Sammy, you are amazing!
What a fantastic way to celebrate all her achievements! For all the critics - you need a sense of humour transplant! You rock, Sammy!!
Hi Suzi. Having a birthday party and celebrating how awesome you are is fine.
It's the 'marriage, and 'wedding' to herself that is oddly insulting. She's made a joke of something many people take quite seriously. I find the whole idea of marrying yourself cringe-worthy, especially at 50 when you should be more socially aware. Plus, millions of Australians like myself are supportive of gay marriage. It pains me that they will never experience this basic human right to marry the person you love .... yet, apparently getting married is a joke now.
I don't find it funny, I find it quite sad. It's like 'well, no one will marry me, I may as well marry myself'. What if she had a funeral service to bury her old self ... it would be distasteful wouldn't it? How about if she hooked up a cutout of her old self to a chemo setup, because the old her self was dying.
She could have set up a podium with gold medals or printed magazine cover mockups to celebrate her achievements instead. Or just a banner of congratulations.
