In a bland, windowless courtroom on the basement level of Sydney’s Downing Centre court, a forensic psychiatrist climbs into the witness box.
Dr Olav Nielssen is accustomed to analysing high-profile criminals. This time, it’s Robert Hughes – the former star of Hey Dad! who’s been convicted of sexually abusing four girls.
Paedophiles, Nielssen says, usually come across “quite creepy and distasteful”. But “I didn’t detect anything like that from Mr Hughes”.
“I could qualify that, by saying he’s a professional actor… and a professionally charming person.”
In the expert’s experience, it’s unusual for child sex offenders to have ‘satisfactory’ adult relationships. Hughes goes against the grain.
From all accounts, the former actor is ‘happily’ married to theatrical agent Robyn Gardiner. A devoted father to Jessica. Someone who used to be “as well-known as the Prime Minister”, according to his lawyer.
Prosecutors say he’s also a brazen predator, who believed he could do “whatever he liked to young girls”. A sex offender who was warned back in 1985… yet “continued to offend”.
I covered Hughes’ six-week trial almost every day from beginning to end.
As a court reporter for Seven News, it’s one of hundreds of sinister cases I follow throughout the year. Some are best not to mention at dinner parties. Others are literally the stuff of my nightmares. But this one felt close to home.

I have worked in the entertainment industry in Australia for over thirty years. Robyn Gardiner (Robert Hughes' de-facto wife) was this country's leading agent, and still has dealings with her high profile clients. (She did 'sell' the agency and it is now RGM and Associates, but I presume that part of the good will of the sale included her remaining as the agent for the high profile actors, such as Cate Blanchett).
There is no denying that Robyn Gardiner was/is great at her job, however, one of our then major casting consultants, Liz Mullinar, tried to speak to Robyn Gardiner about her husband many years ago. Robyn did not want to know about it, and as such, is a typical wife in denial.
Of course, it is not Robyn Gardiner's 'fault' that her husband was/is a child sex offender. Nevertheless, now that she (Robyn) KNOWS about her husband, surely she (as a somewhat public figure herself) should now come out in defense of these poor victims whose lives have been forever damaged by Robert Hughes. Not a word from Robyn Gardiner, or her 'stars', (from what I have found). This troubles me greatly, as I believe Robyn owes it to these women to apologise for not looking more deeply into several of these accusations when they first took place in the 1980s.
Thanks for writing this Jodie. As a survivor myself I know how re-trauamtising the criminal justice system is when victims of these crimes try to get some protection & justice. Nightmare.
We need more advocates like yourself, who are in hi-profile positions to inform the public of this reality.
To show how the process of dealing with these criminals so often turns the victims into the criminals.
How with these types of sexual assault crimes, both historical & present day, the adversarial system of proving guilt beyond reasonable doubt is the reason for this & needs to be changed.
Community attitude plays a central role in this & I feel we need to keep informing the public of WHY these predator/perpertrators are so protected by the law & getting away with these heinous crimes against our children & other victims of these crimes.
ps ..hope you enjoy your holiday..you deserve it..
