Anyone else a bit sleepy after staying up late watching Rupert, James and Rebekah at the parliamentary hearings last night? I’m such a media nerd.
It’s open post time when I give you an overview of the week around here and you can discuss anything at all you want to, in the comments.
The Today Show
I’m often asked about Karl and what he’s really like. We’ve been doing the ‘What’s Making News‘ segment each week for about 18 months and I could not be more comfortable on that set. As for Karl, he is exactly how he appears on screen. So is Lisa. And Georgie. And Ben. And Dickie. And Stevie Jacobs.
You have to be. At that hour and when you’re doing almost 20 hours of live TV every week, you cannot feasibly be fake or put on a TV personality. You just have to be yourself.
Karl and I have a great time. My Dad says he can tell I’m relaxed because my voice is normal pitch. “When you’re nervous, you’re voice goes up. The difference between Today and your Sky show is about an octave.”
Ha. He’s bang on. At LEAST an octave.
I’m asked: do you get nervous? Nope. Because I trust Karl to drive the bus responsibly, move us from topic to topic and I can read his body language about when we have to move on or when I have to wrap it up.
It’s honestly one of my favourite things to do. The crew and cast are just so warm and wonderful. A more supportive team I’ve never worked with – behind the scenes too.
The post
Yesterday, I published this post that I wrote about journalism and then went to an all-day meeting that meant I was off-line pretty much the whole day. This doesn’t happen that long but it’s astonishing how often me being off-line co-incides with us publishing a post written by me that becomes heated.

Just wanted to share this link: Bowery, a Style Icon who inspired so many, (check Lady Gaga's wardrobe?!) - has been joined by Lucian Freud this week - in the big design house in the sky. Lucian ( psychoanalyst Sigmund's Grandson) painted many portraits, Bowery and the Queen's amongst them...
Hi Mia,
I have a question. Some background first.
I get up every morning and I teach. I teach my children right from wrong, I teach them table manners, I teach them how to be kind and loving, I teach them how to behave and I teach them all the little things in between. I have been doing this for 11 years so far and will keep going for many years to come. Yet, I can't put 'teacher' in the occupation box on an application. I have put in the hard yards, but I didn't get a degree in teaching (though I have one in something else).
You have worked in the magazine and media industry for years, but you don't have a degree or education in Journalism, yet you feel you have the right to put 'journalist' in the occupation box of applications. Can you explain why? Wouldn't it be more accurate to put 'writer' or 'business owner'? Aren't you, by putting 'journalist' in that box, essentially downplaying it for those that did go to school and study and get their degree in journalism? I do realise probably none of those people will ever see an application of yours where you have filled that box with 'journalist', but you have very prominently mentioned this is what you do on another post.
Thanks.
Jacinta, that doesn't sound like a question. More like an assertion and a passive aggressive dig.
Also, I think that Mia has worked within a professional capacity as a journalist at a level few grads will. As a postgrad myself I can't relate to your ideas about application boxes?!
You seem to have an axe to grind. At least be upfront about wanting to make a point about being university educated and application boxes or whatever it is instead of framing it as a question.
