She’s been mocked for years for being un-feminine. Clinical. Cold. But Julie Bishop made Australia proud on the weekend.
Yes, the Foreign Minister is making me feel better about living in a world dealing some terrifyingly tragic situations.
When she talks. I listen. I watch. And for two reasons:
Julie Bishop speaking at the UN overnight.
1. She speaks. Seriously. She has the best don’t-you-even-think-about-messing-with-me tone in Australian politics.
2. The glare. The pursed lips. Enough said.
Speaking at the UN overnight, she told the world’s most important leaders exactly what most of us are thinking.
She said that the bodies of the victims from flight MH17 should be treated “with dignity’’ and that not providing access to the crash site is “despicable”.
Despicable. It truly is.
“All parties are required to fully cooperate with these efforts…. Russia must use its influence over the separatists to ensure this.”

Meanwhile the Maylasian And Dutch Prime Ministers have quietly and competently gone about their jobs and secured the bodies and the planes black boxes . No grandstanding at the UN or chest beating about who is responsible, just getting done what needs to be done. Our PM and Foreign Minister arent doing anymore than what I would have expected from any politician of any party, and the really sad thing is that we consider this exceptional behaviour reflects really badly on the state of Politics in Australia.
I am up voting you because 1) I agree, and 2) bushpiglet is a sterling name.
Please don't describe the Australian foreign minister appearing and advocating passionately at the UNSC on behalf of 38 dead Australians as "grandstanding". That is a terrible insult to all of our dead.
I totally agree about grandstanding being an insult to the dead.
Re-read the post, bushpiglet. The "terrible insult" is clearly referring to the verb "describe". Anything to say about the fact that Labor are in full agreement with her?
If only Julie Bishop and the rest of the Liberal party (Scott Morrison and Tony Abbot, I'm looking at you!) could show this kind of compassion and determination when dealing with the plight of asylum seekers. Asking too much there though I think.
