9 of the biggest boob myths you thought were true. Busted.

A lot of people have a lot to say about boobs, but it’s not all true. You need to know the facts, especially if you want to keep your breasts in the best possible shape. Here, we bust nine of the biggest boob myths.

The myths about boobs.

1. Boobs should be perfectly symmetrical.

Is it the same all the way around?

Nearly all women have one breast larger than the other, and it tends to be the left one. The size difference usually isn’t that much, maybe just a fifth of a cup size. Only about five per cent of women have noticeably uneven boobs.

2. Staring at women’s breasts for 10 minutes a day is equivalent to 30 minutes of aerobic exercise.

Shall we get you a mirror?

This “fact” has been quoted on the internet for years. Apparently, it was the finding of a study carried out by Dr Katren Weatherby in Frankfurt, Germany. Unfortunately for men everywhere, Dr Weatherby doesn’t exist. And this is absolutely not true.

3. You don’t need to wear a sports bra if you have small boobs.

I'll just wear curlers.

Boobs of every size need support when exercising. Even if you’re an A-cup, you can damage the Cooper’s ligaments (that’s the connective tissue that supports your breasts) by exercising without wearing a sports bra. You need to make sure you have the best and most supportive bra for your workouts.

Just as an FYI, you should know that this post is sponsored by Berlei. But all opinions expressed by the author are 100% authentic and written in their own words.

4. If you’re flat-chested by the time you’ve reached your full height, your boobs are never going to grow.

“I’m sure they’re getting bigger…”

Your breasts can start developing any time up to the age of 20 – and they can keep growing into your twenties. So even if you’re a late developer, you can still end up busty.

5. Breastfeeding makes your boobs sag.

Hopefully, he doesn’t suck all the perk out of my boob.

A lot of women used to believe this, and it used to make some opt for the bottle. However, research has found that it’s pregnancy that causes sagging, not breastfeeding. To minimise post-baby boob droop, try to keep your pregnancy weight gain within the healthy range.

6. You don’t need a sports bra if you exercise by walking.

What about a light jog?

The truth is that even walking can damage your Cooper’s ligaments. And once you damage the ligaments and your boobs begin to droop, there’s no way to reverse the damage. Sorry.

7. If you put a pencil under your breast and it doesn’t fall out, your breasts are saggy.

“A certain amount of sagging is normal.”

A certain amount of sagging is normal. Plastic surgeons don’t generally consider a breast “saggy” unless the nipple is below the inframammary fold (that’s the line where the breast meets the chest).

8. Once you’ve been professionally fitted for a bra, you can just keep buying bras in that size.

Too easy.

At least 80 per cent of Australian women are wearing bras that aren’t the right size, so clearly, something’s going wrong. The most obvious explanation is that women’s breast size changes over the course of their lives, especially as they gain and lose weight. Another point to remember is that the bra sizing can differ between brands. So make sure you get the perfect fit for you every time you go bra shopping.

9. Men are all the same when it comes to boob preference.

You’re telling us that men don’t enjoy looking at these more than others?

Research (and not by Dr Weatherby) has shown that men with a low income prefer larger breasts than men with a high income. Research has also shown that if men are asked when they’re hungry what breast size they prefer, they point to big boobs. Draw your own conclusions.
