But the one thing we’d always, always, ALWAYS do was take the dog for a walk before bed. It didn’t matter if it was 9pm or 1am, we’d grab our runners (and fluffy jumpers in the winter) and walk a couple of blocks.
I’m putting my foot down – literally. I’m going to walk more every day.
This week, I’ve started getting out and walking again at night and I’m actually really enjoying it. (Maybe more than the glass of wine.)
Summer’s almost here, the night’s are long and walking- especially when you do it with someone else – can be kind of therapeutic.
I’ve just moved house so deciding to walk more every day has allowed me to explore the new suburb and say hi to some of the new neighbours. It gives me a chance to catch up on what’s happening with friends or my boyfriend, clear my head if I’m walking alone and it’s a constant reminder that there’s more to life than what’s happening on TV and computer screens.
And if I’m really struggling, it’s good to know that there’s always the record button for later.
Despite our best intentions, particularly in the colder months, staying active and healthy isn’t easy. We aim to give up chocolate, abandon alcohol and promise to visit the gym four times a week, only to fail. A Little Less, A Little More reminding people that making small commitments is a much more achievable and sustainable way of living a balanced lifestyle. What will you do? Last week Elissa committed to ‘A little less procrastination, a little more bush walking‘. This week Lucy is pledging ‘A little less vino, a little more walking’.
So, what could you be doing a little less of, and a little more of instead?

I've also been doing this! I never used to be much of an alcohol drinker but then I got into the habit of using a glass (or two... or three) of wine as a reward for getting through bad days. And I have had a LOT of bad work days in recent months.
I decided to drop the wine for a while, so that I'm fresh going into the Christmas period, and I'm back into walking. I walk around the neighbourhood... it's about a 5km loop with some big hills so it's a decent bit of exercise to end the day with... and with the added thinking time, I often get more clarity about my bad days than the wine will ever give me.
I've also cut right down on the wine and have started walking more. Alas, I don't have a dog, but I have discovered the joys of walking around the block. It takes 7 minutes to get around it, so I often do it before I get in the car to go to work, as soon as I get home from work, after I've chopped up the vegies, when dinner's in the oven etc.
I'd much prefer to spend an hour and go somewhere different, but 7 minute increments are all I've got right now - I figure it all adds up!
