What you do on social media says a lot about your evil side.

Social media is evil AF and now we know it for sure.

I mean, we always kind of suspected anyway, right? It’s addictive, fun, it feels good, it turns mere mortals into megastars, and leaves everyone else feeling a bit shit afterwards.

Then, I read a theory that says the most successful social media platforms are all booming for a very interesting reason;

They are based around the seven deadly sins.

Yikes.

It’s a theory by the guy that started LinkedIn, Reid Hoffman. He says social networks do best when the tap into our basic depraved desires and vices. Because humans have always been immoral, shiftless and self-gratifying. And now we can do all of it, on tap. And we can’t stop. Because hidden within us is this evil desire to fulfil these needs.

Listen to me, Mia Freedman and Kate Di Brito argue it out here, where we decide what evil sin Snapchat belongs to, and whether you should even HAVE social media in your life at all: (post continues after audio)

And if you think about it, it makes sense:

1. Lust:  Unbridled sexual desire? Well that’s easy. Tinder.

2. Gluttony: The overindulgence and overconsumption of anything to the point of waste? Instagram.

  3. Greed? An inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs? LinkedIn.

  4. Sloth: absence of interest or habitual disinclination to exertion? Netflix.

5. Wrath? The expression of rage and sullenness. Introducing, Twitter.

6. Envy, that which makes people so desire what they don’t have that they become blind to what they DO have? That’s pinterest.

7. And Pride, the weightiest sin, the belief that one is essentially better than all one’s neighbours? Facebook.

But what about Snapchat? That was the big question on the podcast this week. What sin is in the snap?

Apparently some theologians recognise sins beyond the original seven: Vanity or Vainglory—an unrestrained belief in one’s own attractiveness, and a love of boasting. Yep. That's the snapchat I know.

Mamamia out loud is the weekly podcast is where we cover what everyone's talking about. There's ideas, opinions, feminism, family, it's like talking to your girlfriends around the kitchen table.
