The Winter Olympics start today, and as a bit of an ‘up yours’ to Russia and its awful anti-LGBT laws, major players across the globe are making it clear that they support the LGBT community.
First, the Canadian Institute of Diversity and Inclusion released this ad (because “The games have always been a little gay.”)

Brilliant. (And who votes we do an Aussie version with a bobsled?)
Then Google stepped things up even further, changing its homepage doodle to a glorious Sochi-themed graphic in the colours of the gay-pride rainbow. And just in case that wasn’t clear enough, they quoted a message of inclusion from the Olympic Charter right below.

The Olympics were meant to be about leaving any agenda or issues aside and purely about sportsmanship. It is meant to be about athletes competing and that is it. In this day and age when people want to push their agenda views etc... The Olympics is the one time it is totally inappropriate. We live in a world now of people constantly wanting to push their agenda and even though they may be right. This is not the time.
The Olympics is purely about sportsmanship. The true spirit of the Olympics needs to be upheld.

My partner refuses to watch these Winter Olympics because they are in Russia. Out of solidarity with him (and I agree with him but would not do anything about it on my own), I am also not watching it. He is away this weekend and the coming week so it will be hard not to give in to temptation, though.

My boyfriend is the same! He was telling his mum about it yesterday and she said "But the Australian Olympic team need our support!", and he said "Absolutely, and I DO support them. I'll be wishing them all the luck in the world, but I am just not watching the Olympics." Which summed it up pretty nicely, I thought. And I'll be doing the same! :)
