Let’s talk about Facebook-stalking our exes.
And don’t pretend you haven’t done it – we’ve all been there. Some of you more times than you’d care to admit, I’m sure.
I’ll put my hand up. Hell, I’ve even Google-stalked an ex. It felt a bit like looking at online porn: a great idea at the time, but afterwards I just felt silly. And didn’t tell anyone about it.
I tell myself it’s a journalist’s natural curiosity. But really, I’m just nosey as hell.
Let’s face it: there’s no reason to be Facey friends with an ex we have nothing to do with in real life. Remember how it worked in the days before social media? Mostly we’d avoid them at all costs. Or drive by their house.
And really, that’s what Facebook-stalking is: the online equivalent of doing a late-night drive-by.
No, you can’t bring yourself to hit that “unfriend” button because you live in hope that every humble-brag status update and photo of you looking hot drives the knife a little deeper. Plus, you need to keep secretly checking that you’re still winning the break-up.
Watch the Mamamia team reveal what they’d say to ‘the one who got away’. (Post continues after video.)
Instead, the savvy among us take advantage of the magical “unsubscribe from status updates” button, many usually reserve for “new mum” friends, thus keeping the door open to casual surveillance.

i unfriended an ex several years ago, and from what I could gather, he then blocked me. Fine. It was the most positive thing for my mental health. The sooner you stop seeing and reading things about their life, the sooner you stop caring about what they’re up to. Trust me.
I broke up with my ex because he wouldn't let me go to a Co-Ed School, so it caused alot of drama. We eventually got back, and broke up again. But that first year of us dating were the best days of my life (yes I know, I was young but he was my first love). We remained as friend until I started realizing that he started changing the way he spoke to me, always grumpy, gave me rules. I had enough of that, I said no and I asked him straight out do you even love me anymore?, He said no and I ended our friendship. Theres so much to the story that I already know what everyones going to say. Im now 26 (I was 16 at the time and our friendship ended at me being 21). I did still have feelings for him, I promised myself to not contact him, but I can't help it but to see how he is doing with his life. I tried calling him years back asking how he was doing and that went awful. years went by, feelings were eventually gone.
But I;m still trying to find a way to see how he is as a person because he was close with my family and I was so close with his family. I only want to see if hes okay, if he graduated and all that. Im not looking for a relationship or anything as I have my own now and am really happy. But I have this thing to see how my exes are doing, because I did remain good friends with some, like recently I found out my ex got married and had a family and I was so thrilled... I only think of the good memories. I don't do it to sabotage anything;.. I guess we all have different intentions.
