“This test does not assess all of what makes each of you exceptional and unique.”
Teachers from St Paul’s Primary school have sent a letter home with their students ahead of this years NAPLAN testing.
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests basic literacy and numeracy skills in order to ensure that students are progressing as expected within the current curriculum.\
The year three teachers at St Paul’s wanted to let their students know that this test, and any academic testing is not going to test every thing about them.
Here is the letter…
If your kids are preparing to take the NAPLAN test, or if they will at some stage in the future, be sure to let them know:
These tests may be able to score your reading and your writing, but “They can’t tell you how amazingly special you are.”

I actually don't think it's pathetic at all. I have a very nervous year 3 student in my home. He's certainly no more than average academically. Actually he's closer to being below average. Does he have talents? Is he special at anything? Absolutely. I'm very realistic. I know his weaknesses. I am not one of 'those' mothers. He is creative, imaginative and a great story teller. His writing skills don't match that talent. So NAPLAN probably will not showcase his 'talents' at all. He's not good in test situations. All he needs is one bad day and he will bomb out. So I don't think we will get a clear indication of where he's at, at all. At least with regular school testing his teacher can measure progress. One bad result doesn't mean he's 'failed'.
I don't fill my children with false ideas of their ability or importance but reassuring some 8 year olds that if you bomb out on one test you aren't a failure, is sensible in my opinion.
