If you have a child in Years 3, 5, 7 or 9, then you are no doubt aware that they will be sitting the NAPLAN this week.
Firstly, you need to know this – NAPLAN does not measure how academically gifted your child is.
To put it simply, NAPLAN is a measure for the school system to check THEIR performance, not your child’s. Also necessary to know, it isn’t such a bad thing if your child doesn’t blitz these tests. Let me tell you why.
This testing method, which is essentially a snapshot of your child’s knowledge of literacy and numeracy, doesn’t determine or have an effect on their end of year academic outcome. It is simply measuring whether or not children in that grade are at par with their Australian counterparts. If the results indicate that they’re not, in theory, support and guidance will be provided as a result. If they are, however, well that’s fantastic.
Disturbingly however, I’ve heard that there is a lot of stress being placed upon children to ‘do well’ this week in NAPLAN with one mother saying that she has been told that her son’s Year 9 NAPLAN result would make up 10 per cent of his end of year results. Equally disturbing was to hear that one little girl has been pulling out her eyelashes due to the stress of preparation. What kind of madness IS this? And more to the point, who is applying these unreasonable ideals and pressures, the school or the parent?
Having had two children go through school now, I’ve become a bit of a veteran of the NAPLAN and with one son who has Aspergers, have been actively encouraged to ‘sit this one out’. I have very mixed feelings about that whole situation. I agreed to allow him to stay home that day purely because I knew that without some guidance, he simply wouldn’t be able to comprehend the questions and due to low muscle tone, even if he could answer the questions, he would quickly become fatigued. He has since been moved from a mainstream state school so it’s no longer a decision I have to make but I can’t help but think that maybe it would have been better for me to insist that he take the test, fail spectacularly and therefore represent a more realistic result for that particular State Primary School.

This year was the first year I had all 3 of my children doing Naplan, years 3, 5 and 7. My year 7 has 'blitzed' every NAPLAN (so to speak) and is on a scholarship at a 'good school' (so to speak!!). She was also my only child to be, in her words, stressed about NAPLAN, although I don't know if that was just because all her friends were, or whether there was pressure from the school. Certainly there was none from here.
This is the first time my year 5 has done NAPLAN as I withdrew him from it in Year 3, having recently been diagnosed ADHD at the time of the Year 3 test, and us still trying to get his meds/behaviour/life more settled, I didn't want him to go through the added pressure of NAPLAN. This year is different as he is a completely different kid. He's happy just to be doing what everyone else is doing, he couldn't care less how he goes.
My year 3 is Mr Cruisy and just did ticked along as he always does.
We had a great discussion around the dining table last night about NAPLAN and what it all means. I asked the kids if NAPLAN tested how kind they were? How compassionate? How good their musical ability is? How good a friend they are? How good a sportsman they are? To me these are things that are just as important as how well they read and write and do maths, and I told them so. I want well rounded kids.
As an English teacher I am slightly annoyed about some of the arguments presented in this post.
First of all NAPLAN does affect the students' academic results in school because the government has now introduced a mandatory literacy test that all Year 10 students must pass in order to graduate high school. However, if the students score in Band 8 in NAPLAN they will be exempt from this test. If they do not score in Band 8, they will have to pass the literacy test in Year 10. Students who fail to pass this literacy test will not be able to gain their WA Certificate of Education.
Secondly, NAPLAN gives students the chance to practise sitting exams and studying for exams because in Years 11 and 12, students must sit exams in order to gain an ATAR. Then, at university, they will also be required to sit exams. The students will not be successful at exams, if they have never had the opportunity to practise their skills.
Thirdly, the purpose of NAPLAN is to give schools data about the students' literacy so that we may identify areas of weakness and take action. It is not meant to measure which school is best.
Finally, I think as a nation we need toughen up a bit. Yes, kids might be a bit stressed about exams, NAPLAN and so on, but life throws up challenges. Kids need to learn to be resilient and learn to tackle obstacles. If they never experience failure, hardship or challenge, how on earth are they going to survive as adults?
