Child car safety is certainly worth knowing.
It was every parent’s nightmare. It was 2005 and former Australian Wallabies skipper, Phil Kearns was backing out of his driveway in his Sydney home when he felt his 4WD hit a small bump.
He said, at the time, it felt like he had hit a newspaper. It wasn’t until his son started screaming at him that he realised what had happened.
The father of four had run over his 19-month-old daughter.
Little Andie was rushed to Hospital with severe abdominal injuries. After three weeks in intensive care the little girl made it home to her family in time for Christmas.
”It had a huge impact on me,” ‘ he told Fairfax Media, “how could it not? It took a long time to come to terms with.”
Andie Kearns was one of the lucky ones. Driveway fatalities are believed to be second only to backyard pool drownings for childhood deaths.
Experts say as many as three children a week are hit in low-speed run-over accidents, with at least seven of them killed in any year and 60 more seriously injured.
Just as an FYI, you should know that this post is sponsored by Nissan. But all opinions expressed by the author are 100% authentic and written in her own words.
We can’t be there for our kids every single second, and while some of us would like to, we can’t wrap them up in cotton wool either. But there are some things we can do to make our children safer around cars. These 5 child car safety tips are a good starting point.
Child car safety tip #1: Driveway awareness
There’s a couple of interesting measures being undertaken to improve driveway awareness. A great aid to drivers are those reversing cameras. The cars in the upper echelons are generally fitted with them these days, but if you aren’t in the market for a new vehicle just yet there are also a number of after market companies that can provide them for under $200.

When it comes to driveway safety for toddlers (i.e. if one person is leaving or adjusting parking space), we always make sure a second adult is present and holding our son a safe distance away - assuming that if an adult is leaving, there is obviously another adult around to look after the child at home - they should be supervising. When moving the car from one spot on the driveway to the other (i.e. if you're making space for something else or going to wash it on the lawn etc) best way to know where your child is? Put them in the car while you move it!!
Awesome to see some more awareness created for child/road and vehicle safety. Thank you to the author of this article and to Nissan.
Hi everyone. My name is Niki. I am a solo Mum of 4 awesome kids, aged between 5 and 14. I am also an Early Childhood Educator and Author living on the Gold Coast. My kids are like any other - spirited and full of energy and it can be stressful at times to keep them safe when out and about and around vehicles. As a parent, I have also had concerns about driveway safety, especially when my children were younger, as it is not always possible to watch kids 24 hours.
My passion is in helping others, especially children, parents and families. I have recently launched a child safety initiative and safety resource for families called Safe Spot Sticker. A very simple but effective concept and product. Safe Spot Sticker is a specially designed sticker which goes on the outside panel; passenger side of your car - providing an exact spot for your child to touch, wait and stay safe every time they enter or exit your car. The sticker also indicates the safest entry/exit point of your vehicle (furthest away from traffic)
These stickers are also used to indicate a Safe Spot at home (at your front door or near a pool or other danger area) providing once again a safe spot for your kids to wait, while keeping them safe from harm.
The stickers are intended as a practical and educational resources designed to keep kids safe, save lives and reduce stress for busy parents.
I am very proud of all Safe Spot Sticker can achieve, and I would be honored if you would please check this new child safety initiative out and share it with everyone you know - you never know when you may literally save a life. Please also check out our preferred charities system and support an amazing organisation in the process.
