Australia is in the top 10 in the world – but we’re not talking about it…
You’ve probably heard about the recent scandal surrounding FIFA boss, Sepp Blatter who has been accused of and investigated for corruption. You probably know he’s resigned from his head honcho position in the international soccer league.
You may also have heard about the recent announcement that soccer star great, Lionel Messi is facing a trial (with his father) for $4.6 million in tax fraud. And you’ve probably heard a few whispers of more scandals and speculations surrounding the international soccer.
For more on the FIFA scandal: The FIFA president who resigned is also a racist, sexist homophobe.
But what you probably haven’t heard about – what very few people are reporting on or giving air time to – is one of Australia’s best teams playing on the world stage right now, representing their country and making us Aussies proud. You probably haven’t heard about the many teams from around the globe stepping up with their best players, playing tough games and giving FIFA a good name – showing us (as spectators) exactly what it means to play the sport.
Everyone: The FIFA Women’s World Cup is on in Canada. And we’re playing like superstars. So well, that overnight the Matilda’s squad have taken home a 2-0 win over Nigeria.
You may not have heard that one of Australia’s greatest soccer players just competed in her 100th ‘A’ international game for Australia – a feat only matched by Australian soccer legend, Tim Cahill. You may not even know her name – Lisa De Vanna – she is co-captain of the Westfield Matildas who are playing in the FIFA World Cup right now. De Vanna made her Matildas debut in 2004 and this is her third FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign. She’s 30 years old and has scored 36 goals in her 100 games – including an amazing shot against the US last Monday.

I understand people not liking the negativity, but seriously, this article is spot on!! So what if you happened to see the 10 second score update on the news? And well done for being up to date on current affairs but if it were mens everyone would know about it!!
Three days before the Matildas opening World Cup match there was a full page spread on the socceroos in the weekend paper, about their road in qualifying -- THAT is the point. The women's team get next to no promotions/media coverage and unless you watch sbs most people wouldn't know the world cup is on. Move to the USA and the national team members are household names, have been for years, because they are promoted in the media and they have a face, its time for Australia to get on board with ALL womens sports and stop letting the males dominate every paper and news broadcast.
That is why writing negative articles do no good to any of the womens sports. Instead of writing this piece why didn't this writer bother to find out about the women representing Australia? Why didn't she promote the times and stations showing the games? A phone call or an email to the Association requesting material to write a full page spread on the participants instead of this article would have been much more use. I am female I like some sports and I watch the netball and the men's cricket and the AFL. I do not like watching the women's cricket as I do not find it interesting. That is the point, as the female sport becomes more interesting then I will watch. It is my choice and no amount of promotion will get me to watch any sport, both male and female, that I find uninteresting.
Wha? I have seen updates on this almost every day on morning news, at least. I don't watch evening, so not sure. But have definitely heard of it, and my husband has been more interested than I have been (I'm just not a sport loving gal). This is a weird article...
