Today, everyone’s newsfeeds are alive with people talking about Operation Fortitude.
Here’s a quick guide to explain what happened.
1. What was Operation Fortitude?
Operation Fortitude was a joint operation between the Federal Government’s Australian Border Force, Victoria Police, Metro Trains, Yarra Trams, the Sheriff’s Office and the Taxi Services Commission. It was supposed to be deployed this weekend.
According to a media release released by the Australian Border Force, officials would be “at various locations around the CBD speaking with any individual we cross paths with”. The release went on to say: “You need to be aware of the conditions of your visa … if you commit visa fraud you should know it’s only a matter of time before you’re caught out.”
It wasn’t just visa fraud that was being targeted. The release also said that Operation Fortitude would be “targeting everything from anti-social behaviour to outstanding warrants”, with a particular focus on “people travelling to, from and around” the CBD.

10 million dollars. It makes me feel sick. Unfortunately I could see it playing out this way if Abbott became PM. The only good thing is that Abbott and his front bench are so bumbling and stupid that they can't roll out the conservative/nazi tricks in the playbook without it being painfully obvious and clumsy.
$42 million dollars. That's how much it cost us to bid for the World Cup in 2009 under Kevin Rudd. A bid that ended up getting us one single vote. Of course no-one remembers how incompetent the previous Labor government(s) were when they're using any excuse to stick the boot into Tony Abbott again.
Maybe, just maybe, it's possible to criticize any government regardless of who is in power? The World Cup bid was definitely a waste of money.
Under Hockey as Treasurer, Australia has it's highest unemployment rate in 12 years and the debt and deficit has doubled. Why won't you criticize the Abbott government?
I'm happy to criticize the Abbott government when criticism is due, however on this website in particular, I find that there is a great quantity of Abbott hating articles and comments with Abbott supporters such as myself being few and far between, so I'm more likely to comment when someone is bashing Abbott.
As per your comment and the issues that you raised, the unemployment rate was skyrocketing at the end of Labors term, the current rate was predicted before the Abbott government even got into power. The deficit hasn't doubled, it's reduced significantly down from the $42 billion that Labor left, to something like $28 billion.
The debt has of course continued to grow, as you would be well aware, it's impossible that it wouldn't when the budget is in deficit, and any attempt to repair the budget gets blocked in the senate. Of course there's all the locked in spending over the forward estimates that Labour so helpfully left us with, not much the current government can do about that.
Criticizing the Government doesn't equate to 'Abbot Bashing.' The PM of any Government will get criticized and held to a high standard. You should voice your criticisms as well as your support of the Government.
Agreed the unemployment rate was skyrocketing, but Coalition policies have further increased the growth (e.g.manufacturing). Blaming the Senate is not an excuse. You have to negotiate in the Senate in order to pass legislation, and this has been Abbott's weakness. The 2014 Budget is in conflict with the Coalition's mantra of ending the 'age of entitlement,' leaving the public confused and over it.
Operation Fortitude = Incompetence by Minister Dutton. The whole saga was a complete joke honestly.
