With Easter fast approaching and only a day left until we’ll be consuming copious amounts of chocolate, have any of us truly given thought to where our (beloved) chocolate is coming from, or how exactly it’s produced?
Many Australians have no idea most chocolate products stocked in supermarkets contain ingredients that are sourced from developing countries where there are high levels of exploitation and unsustainable practices.
In this interview, Fairtrade cocoa farmer and single mother-of-seven Mary Appiah in Ghana shares the effect Fairtrade certified products have in enhancing underdeveloped communities. And after reading it, we’ll never shop for chocolate the same way again.

Hi I'm Wendy Wabbit and this is a timely post because I have a Facebook page encouraging "Ethical Easter". The idea is to only buy and eat Fairtrade chocolate at Easter. The idea is if everyone committed to doing this for the Easter weekend he massive sales of Fairtrade chocolate, as opposed to other chocolate, would force chocolate makers to make more Fairtrade chocolate. There is a limited choice at the moment but if we all eat it enmasse this weekend they will start making more of it and give us more variety.
Coles have a FairTrade bunny for $2.50 and they also have their own chocolate blocks (milk, dark, mint) for $2.50. Oxfam have a great range too. Chocolatier have some eggs (not all) that are Fairtrade. Green & Blacks also have some bars. Cadbury's dairy milk is Fairtrade, but be careful as none of their other chocolate is, but if you feel like doing something fancy you could do something like get their milk chocolate treat sizes and wrap them in cellophane and a bow.
This are the brands I know of, there may be more. You need to look on the product for the Fairtrade logo, it's quite distinctive (you can see it on my Facebook page or google it)
If you want to find out more check out my Facebook page, as I have photos of these products. (I have already taste tasted the Coles Fairtrade bunny - yummy!)
