The finale of the controversial series is here.
More than 1.3 million people tuned in to see the first episode of SBS’s Struggle Street.
But tonight, after a shit storm of massive proportions that followed the first promo and the airing of the first episode, SBS has aired the double-episode finale of the show that was labelled by some as “poverty porn”.
Those featured in the show were reportedly outraged by how they were portrayed in the preview and – after they were given an advance screening of it – the first episode.
Though many people argued that these people had agreed to having their lives recorded regularly over a six-month period, questions were raised about the whether they had given informed consent.

I am the deputy of a large school and what I watched on TV is what I deal with day in and day out- parents with little or no skills to be able to look after and raise their children, families lurching from one issue to the next. It is not money or even intervention that will help these parents- the sad fact is give them $1m tomorrow and they still will not have the skills required to do even what most would consider a middle of the range job of parenting. It will take great leadership from the highest levels of government to break this cycle. The rights of the children featured in this program have been out behind the rights of the adults and the family unit that governments try to desperately (for whatever reason) to keep together. These kids should be removed permanently from adults ill equipped to look after and care for them. Perhaps then the children I see in year 10 who are from families who are fourth generation unemployed will have a chance at becoming something their families will never be able to provide them with.
As someone that pays considerable amount of tax, could I please request that mandatory birth control classes be given to welfare recipients. That Bob and Billie Jo do not deserve one cent of my tax dollars to buy heroin, ice, bongs and ciggies while she is pregnant - what an absolute disgrace of a human being.
