UPDATE: Malaysian authorities confirm that Flight MH370 was hijacked.

Malaysian investigators have concluded that missing flight MH370 was hijacked by one or more people with significant flying experience. The hijackers turned off the Malaysia Airlines jet’s communication devices and then steered it off-course.

The motive behind the attack and possible demands are still unknown. Although, a Malaysian official (who spoke to the media on the condition of anonymity) has stated that the hijacking is no longer a theory.

“It is conclusive,” he said.

The Malaysian Prime Minister is expected to hold a press conference later this evening.

NSW reforms could see domestic violence perpetrators tracked using GPS equipment.

Tracking devices proposed for NSW domestic violence perpetrators

Domestic violence perpetrators would wear compulsory tracking devices like those worn by high-risk sex offenders under a proposal by the NSW government. Community Services Minister Pru Goward will propose the measure to a ministerial taskforce next week.

GPS tracking bracelets were rejected by a NSW parliamentary enquiry two years ago over questions of the reliability of the technology and the resulting false sense of security that it could provide for victims.

The devices have also been proposed by the WA government, and are currently used in several US states.

There will be no easy solution for Ukraine after 11-hour talks between US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov ended without resolution. During the discussion, Kerry pushed Lavrov to postpone the Crimea referendum, which will see Crimea vote for the independence from Ukraine, saying that the US would join Ukraine and the EU in not recognising the referendum if it went ahead.

Malaysia Airlines missing flight search intensifies in Indian Ocean

Suggestions that Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 was deliberately flown off course to the Andaman Islands have intensified the search in the Indian Ocean region.

The New York Times has reported that the flight was experiencing significant changes in altitude after it lost contact with ground control, with sources saying that flight patterns indicate that the plane was being flown by the pilots or by someone with aviation knowledge that would allow them to seek out established air corridors, known as waypoints.

A senior Malaysian official told Reuters that they are “looking at sabotage, with hijack still on the cards”.

Iraq drafts law legalising child marriage

Iraq’s Justice Ministry has approved a law that appears to make the marriage of girls as young as nine a legal practice. The proposed Jaafari Personal Status Law will repeal current legislation, which states that the minimum age for marriage is 15 with a guardian’s approval, by failing to provide a minimum age for marriage. However, the proposed legislation sets out terms of divorce for girls as young as nine.
