WARNING: This post contains explicit details about child sexual abuse and intergenerational incest. If you or someone you know has been a victim, we’d recommend you don’t read any further.
There’s a nine-year-old girl who doesn’t know how to use the toilet and a 12-year-old boy who doesn’t understand showering.
A 15-year-old boy cannot talk in a way that can be understood, and his developmental ability is at that of a children still in kindergarten.
A 14-year-old boy has a severe intellectual disability. He has not grown properly; he is seriously underweight. He also cannot read nor write like a teenager should.
Then there’s the 14-year-old girl. She doesn’t know how to clean her teeth or use toilet paper, also can’t read and write and doesn’t even know how to run a brush through her own hair.
These are just some of the stories of the group of 40 adults and children who authorities recently discovered living in a valley just southwest of Sydney.
Most of the 12 children, aged between 5 and 16, were malnourished and showing signs of severely decayed teeth. Many can’t talk, and almost all of them can’t read or write, and most had probably never seen a doctor or gone to school.
NSW Police and Community Services discovered what was happening when in July 2012 they responded to reports from local residents that children living on the property weren’t attending school. One senior police officer said she would never get over what she saw.

What happened at the farm, from what one can glean from the judgement, was beyond horrific.
But there is another dimension to all of this. The judgement reveals that NSW DoCS actually visited the property earlier in 2012. They deemed the property dirty and unsafe, and asked that the parents clean it up. They then left the families for several months, presumably to "clean up their act". All the while the children stayed on at the property. DoCS returned in July accompanied by Police, and seized the children then. They have subsequently, and completely unsurprisingly, been made wards of the state now until they are 18.
The judgement also reveals that DoCS were receiving reports about this family since 2010. The townspeople saw the kids coming and going from the town a few times a year, and were reporting to the relevant authorities.
And what happened, up until July 2012? Nothing. DoCS' response to this family situation can be coloured as nothing short of devastatingly negligent. The fact they themselves saw the property, the family and the children, with their own eyes, and then walked away??? Giving the parents a chance to "clean up"? Absurd.
I am also shocked that this has been so low-profile in the media.
And lastly, there is nothing being said about the parents being prosecuted. The children reported rampant sexual abuse between themselves and their parents/relatives. Sexual abuse of the most disturbing kind. This is all in the judgement.
Are the parents being prosecuted? We really have no idea because the media apparently doesn't give a sh*t about this story, and instead we are hearing stories about Kim Kardashian's kid's eyebrows. In my view the parents should be jointly tried for neglect, abuse and sexual offences against the children.
My heart goes out to these children. They were born in to some of the most tragic circumstances imaginable. These circumstances would be horrific even in the backwaters of the third world. And this was going on locally right under our noses. I hope the kids can do well in their new homes, and one day enjoy happy and relatively normal lives.
Also the town name is published in the judgement. I don't see any suppression orders around the republication of the name. It is easy to find out.
My best to the victims and that they recieve the true, real love and care they deserve.
