Vogue Italia pulls online pic of model after it is used on ‘pro-ana’ blogs
The fashion magazine featured a photo spread of 19-year-old model Karlie Kloss only to discover one of the images was being idolised on pro-anorexia blogs as ‘thinspiration’. Pro-ana blogs, as they are known, are a network of websites that push unhealthy body types as an ideal. Critics said the magazine should never have featured the photos in the first place, but praised Vogue for removing them from the online article they accompanied.
Fr. Chris Riley received $50,000 from Australia’s largest poker machine manufacturer
The charity worker who founded Youth off the Streets and who has come out in support of Clubs Australia to oppose poker machine reforms has also received large donations from gaming machine makers. On top of receiving more than $122,000 from clubs (as part of their giving back to the community arrangements) he also received $50,000 from Aristocrat Leisure, Australia’s largest gaming company. Fr Riley had added his support to the Clubs Australia campaign, appearing on a flyer they have been distributing claiming the proposed mandatory pre-commitment technology would not work and that counselling and education was the key. He is also a nominee for Australian of the Year.

I always liked Karlie Kloss as a model. She's a ballerina as well, and has always been naturally lean. Her specific body type has actually made some of my friends feel *better* about being athletic/beanpoles.
Thinspiration is sourced from everywhere and anywhere - sure, fair enough to pull the photo, but I fear that this misunderstands and trivialises the issue. These sites use everything from photos of real girls to celebrities to models - and for many, it's not about wanting to look like a model, it's about how thin = control. This seems especially prevalent in anorexic rape survivors. If we blame the modeling industry, though I don't deny it can contribute (esp for those in it - just read Portia de Rossi's book), we over-simplify a disease that already makes sufferers feel misunderstood and judged.
Karlie Kloss is gorgeous but this photo is horrible. The way she's contorted doesn't do her justice...I don't even know how it made it to that stage of production!
Never heard of Karlie Kloss, but that photo is terrible. Looks like she's dislocated her legs or something!
My god, hearing about the tsunami funds going towards aiding ILLEGAL whaling makes my blood boil! Not only is whaling totally barbaric and a completely agonising way for whales to die, there are thousands of Japanese people that desperately need that money to help rebuild their lives.
I cannot put into words how angry I felt reading that. I’m going to make a donation to Sea Shepherd right now so I know my money is going towards the RIGHT side of the fight. Stories like this solidify my reasoning for donating only to animal charities.
