***Charlie Pickering wrote this story for Mamamia in 2013 at the height of the booing campaign against Adam Goodes. In light of the documentary, The Final Quarter, which reflected on that period in Australian history, we have chosen to republish the words of Pickering which are as relevant now as they were then.
I know nothing about racism in Australia.
And unless you’ve experienced it, neither do you.
“I’m just calling to talk about this whole Adam Goodes thing… I just wanted to say that I don’t think racism is that bad in Australia. I just think it’s not such a big deal.”
– Jan from Hawthorn, white, first time caller, long time listener.
I know nothing about racism in Australia.
I cried with pride when an Australian Prime Minister finally apologised to the stolen generation on behalf of the Australian government.
I remember clearly the day that Nicky Winmar lifted his shirt to show how proud he was of his black skin. And I know why, for a significant and important part of our national community, January 26 is not a day of celebration.

Charlie for PM. Then Waleed. Or both!
Vomit.
Australians are racist, no doubt. We are selfish and self centered. People dont stick up for each other or themselves. As a nation we blame the poor, sick , elderly and unemployed for debts. We watch people we work with made redundant and keep our heads down hoping we arent next. Every event or gathering must have alcohol to numb the sadness of a 30 year morgage, a wife that converses in common lingo regarding work, downsizing, bosses that dont have a clue and who should be fired. Kids we supply with toys, then electronics, then alcohol to dull their resentment towards parents that work and dont nurture Who work more to pay for their guilt at not being parents only providers. The friends that dont stimulate us, but we need to measure our new debts with while talking about how easy it all is while drinking away the worries of debt, work and our kids. The worlds second most overpriced houses we will own when we are 60 our investment, the 400k holy grail that cost 1.2 million with interest over 30 years, caused 30 years of financial fear, seperated us from wives and children. We wait for the time of our lives at 70 or 75 by then for our super payday. Its not there but if we are never old enough to retire we wont notice. A holiday once a year on credit cards to tell the friends about and a staple of conversation involving sports, sports tipping, drinking, sport drinking incidents and people you would fire at work.
Human rights, democratic awareness, climate control, cuts to education, health, aged, poor, rich, corrupt, tax hikes, gst hikes, government and corporations working against people, police corruption, solar and wind power, alcoholism, domestic violence. Are not issues in Australia. Sports is an issue and race is an issue. We are the rest of the worlds joke in Australia, evolution has left us behind and every person I know is racist in their own way.
