When Margaret  Adamcewicz took out her trash one May day, she had no idea she would be opening her door to an uninvited house guest.

In the limited time it took the New Jersey resident to put the garbage outside, Jason Hubbard — a former boyfriend of Ms Adamcewicz’ daughter — allegedly waltzed into her home, WABC TV reports.

When his indoor escapades were interrupted, Mr Hubbard dove under the bed in the now-vacant room that once belonged to his ex-girlfriend.

Without an opportunity to leave — Mr Hubbard stayed there for up to five days before being discovered.

Mr Hubbard’s hideout was finally discovered on 10 May when Ms Adamcewicz’ husband heard a noise in the room and looked under the bed in the room.

“He was hiding upstairs underneath the bed, in my daughter’s bedroom,” Ms Adamcewicz told WABC.

“He used to date my daughter five years ago…It didn’t end well…He didn’t say why he came back. He just picked our house to hide out in. He didn’t have a home to live in.

“I haven’t heard from him in five years. I wasn’t scared, I was just angry.”

The New Jersey family phoned the police, who came to arrest the intruder.

Prior to the arrest, the Adamcewicz’ 28-year-old son restrained Mr Hubbard.

Ms Adamcewicz told local media she didn’t believe Mr Hubbard had any food, only water, throughout his stay.

He did, however, manage to charge four mobile phones during that time.

Mr Hubbard was charged with trespassing, burglary and theft of services: Ie. the electricity he used to charge the phones.

He remains in prison, with bail set at $US50,000.
