It is the country’s first free vote in 25 years.
One of the world’s most famous political prisoners, Aung San Suu Kyi appears set for an amazing political victory tonight in Myanmar against her country’s military rulers.
International media are reporting the promising results with accounts her supporters are dancing in the rain with happiness across Myanmar (also known as Burma).
“I think you all know the results,” Aung San said as she made her first public speech.

When Ms Suu Kyi’s party won the 1990 elections in a landslide the army generals refused to accept the result and put her under house arrest for 15 out of 21 years.
Her life has been extremely challenging after she was blocked from seeing her own husband when he was dying and having virtually no contact with the outside world during her disturbing house arrest.
Preliminary official results of the poll are expected to be released tomorrow.
