If I became pregnant, there’s some chance I’d be a carrier for a genetic disorder that only affects boys. This condition would see any son I had, live a painful and restricted life before dying young. I’m also diabetic; something I wasn’t going to escape based on family history.
Both these diseases have haunted my families. Being pregnant and giving birth could kill me; I could be sentencing a child to a life of suffering.
So understandably, the decision about whether or not I have children has been very personal and fraught. It’s not a decision I would want anyone to make for me because no one understands my circumstances better than me.
The idea someone else could decide for me is abhorrent.
But one NSW Member of Parliament, Fred Nile, has decided he can.
He’s on a crusade to change the law so that it recognises a foetus as a person. Working direct from the playbook of the radical right in the United States, Fred Nile is supporting a bill into the NSW parliament that would enshrine the concept of ‘foetal personhood’. That bill will be debated today.
This bill first arose following the tragic circumstances of Brodie Donegan and her family. In 2009, a drug-affected driver hit Ms Donegan, who was 8 months pregnant.

What happens if the abnormalities of a child are not discovered until they are, say, around 3 months of age (post birth)? Would you support ending the life of that baby to spare it from future suffering? I suspect most people would (rightly) say no. But if your answer is no, what SCIENTIFIC evidence do you have to show that an unborn baby in the womb is any less of a living human being than that 3-month-old? Since scientists unanimously declare that life begins at conception, why should the location of a human being determine their worth? This is not a religious debate, this is a debate of logic and science, and I am yet to hear a valid scientific argument supporting abortion at any stage.
G.K. Chesterton summed it up perfectly when he said "Men do not differ much about what things they will call evils; they differ enormously about what evils they will call excusable."
What are you fighting for? The choice to abort a baby after 20weeks? Why and how could you possibly do that? You mention medical reasons, they as well as the sex of your baby should be well determined by that stage, instead of campaigning for your right to an abortion, maybe you should be campaingning for sex selection to be made available via Medicare in extreme circumstances. The foetus does not asked to be created, the mothers actions cause it to happen and if they are not interested in the consequence then take effective procautions.
Many people do not find out the sex of a baby until 20 weeks or later. She clearly stated a concern of hers is the genetic disorder that targets males.
