"Will you marry me?": An MP just proposed to his partner of nine years on the floor of Parliament.

In one of Parliament’s most moving moments of 2017, Liberal MP Tim Wilson has proposed to his partner, Ryan Bolger in the House of Representatives.

Shortly after the same-sex marriage bill was introduced to the Lower House, the member for Goldstein showed Australia exactly what this bill means to millions of LGBTQI Australians.

“If I could go back and tell that scared 18-year-old kid he’d be here speaking here, with his partner, Ryan in the gallery, he wouldn’t believe me,” Wilson said while addressing the bill.

Then, speaking directly to his partner, a school teacher, he added, "This debate has been the soundtrack to our relationship... in my first speech, I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands.

"So there's only one thing left to do. Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?", to which Bolger smiled and mouthed the word 'yes'.

Wilson and Bolger have been engaged for nine years, but only now have been able to reaffirm their commitment under the eye of the law.

The same-sex legislation was introduced to the House of Representatives on Monday after passing comfortably through the Senate last week, and is expected to pass soon.

More to come.
