Describe your morning coffee in just three words.

A love letter to our all-time favourite beverage.

I’ve been drinking coffee ever since I was a teenager.

It’s seen me through the HSC, uni, and now the daily nine-to-five.

And it’s pretty safe to say that by now, I can’t get enough of the stuff. In fact, I like coffee more than I like some humans.

Drinking coffee is pretty much the very first thing I do when I open my eyes in the morning. And I go for round two at around 10.30am every weekday morning, when I grab a takeaway large skim mocha with my colleagues.

For me (and pretty much every woman I know), coffee is so much more than a drink.

Of course, it’s delicious, it warms us up on cold winter days, and it perks us up when we’re feeling flat. But it’s also a treat – a small, everyday indulgence that is so, so worth it.

Coffee is also a ritual: it’s something we do daily, and it’s an essential part of our routine. And let’s not forget the social element – ducking out for coffee with my workmates is one of the best parts of the work day, and who doesn’t love catching up with friends on the weekend for a cup?

With that in mind, I recently asked 17 of my favourite women to describe what their coffee means to them in just three words.

Here’s what they had to say:

1. THE. EFFING. BEST – Ally

2. But First, Coffee. – Saengtip

3. Cup Of Joy. Also, excuse to talk to cute baristas – but that exceeds the word limit sadly – Kahla

4. My Life’s Blood – Beth

5. Mummy’s Little Helper – Alys

6. It Changes Me – Sarah

7. Daily Money Pit – Jane

8. Makes Me Nice – Dimity

9. Very Important Beverage – Grace

10. Completely, Utterly Essential – Kate

11. Just Tastes Good – Alex

12. Sweet Rich Deliciousness – Louise

13. Keeps Me Going – Stephanie

14. My Daily Treat – Anna

15. A Non-Negotiable – Lauren

16. Starts My Day – Amy

17. I Need It – Kelly

Judging by those responses, it’s no surprise that Ohio State University and Medical Center Professor of Psychology Gary L Wenk says on Psychology Today that “Scientists have known for many years that coffee stimulates the release of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine produces the euphoria and pleasant feelings that people often associate with their first cup of coffee in the morning.”

Another interesting fact about our favourite coffee choices is that your drink of choice might reveal a lot about your personality.

Research conducted by clinical psychologist Dr Ramani Durvasula showed that people who prefer black coffee tend to be patient, a little old-school and they can also be moody.

Meanwhile, she found that latte drinkers were people pleasers, those who opt for frozen or blended coffee were spontaneous trendsetters, soy and decaf devotees liked order and were the sensitive type and those who love instant were a bunch of laidback procrastinators.

It’s interesting food for thought, and shows that there might be more to your favourite coffee drink than just the demands of your tastebuds.

But at the end of the day, I don’t really care why I love coffee – all I know is that it’s a habit I will never, ever give up.
