3 of the best Spring decorating hacks (for under $20 each).

What are you still doing under that doona?

It’s Spring, people. Time to toss aside those dark clothes, fluffy blankets and hot water bottles.

It’s time… if you are anything like me… to start looking around your home and getting some itchy fingers to add a bit of something-something to your home. Especially if you make a habit of drooling over the spring pages of Vogue Living, like myself.

But… if you are anything like me… poor… then you can’t really go wild on the credit card. (I’m pregnant, expecting a baby any day now and I’ve heard those are very expensive).

Luckily, I’ve stumbled on some Pinterest-worthy decorating hacks without the 20-step complications to get some of the latest trends into my home (in fact, I’ve even been able to use some stuff that has been lying around).

1. Metallic plant pots.

This season it is all about shiny metallic. Unfortunately, some metallic pots cost a bomb. Fortunately, they don’t have to.

Tools.

A drop sheet or old bed sheet.

Dust mask.

Gloves.

Terracotta pot.

Spray primer.

Metallic spray paint (silver or gold).

Towel.

Plant and soil.

Instructions.

1. Find an outdoor space and a drop sheet (or old bed sheet you can surrender to the craft gods). Make sure to also use a dust mask and gloves. Safety first, you know. Plus you look more professional this way.

2. Place the pot in the middle in an upright position.

3. Using the spray primer, spray the inside of the pot and then tip it upside down to do the outside. Let it dry.

4. Now grab your silver or gold metallic spray and spray the inside and outside of the pot again.

5. Chuck in the soil and plant once the spray paint is dry and you can tick the metallic trend homewares box.

2. Geometric plant pots.

If silver and gold isn’t your thing, then go with geometric coloured patterns. You can match the colour to your existing colour scheme and they really add something different. (I’m a lover of the triangle.)

Painter’s tape.

Scissors.

Coloured spray paint.

Towel.

Plant and soil.

Instructions.

1. Find an outdoor space, grab a drop sheet (this could get messy), secure your dust mask and pop on your protective gloves.

2. Put your pot in the middle of the sheet and create a design with the painter’s tape. You can go with stripes, triangles, hexagons (if you are feeling really brave). Wherever you put the tape, is where the original colour of the pot will come through.

3. Spray with your coloured spray paint. There are a lot of pastels going around this spring, but really, it is whatever your heart desires.

4. Wait for the paint to dry and then remove the painter’s tape.

5. Chuck in the soil and plant. I love this look with a couple of pots together. You can either go all the same colour but different designs, or different colours with the same design. Or you can just get crazy and have everything look different.

3. Mood board.

Look, I love pinning things to Pinterest. But I also love the good old-fashioned mood board. When I was younger, I would pin inspirational quotes on it. Now, I put a combination of photos of friends and family, places I have on my must-go-there list and images of things that put a smile on my face.

But it doesn’t have to look boring. In fact, it can look like a piece of artwork for your home.

Instructions.

1. Find a spot outside and spread out your drop sheet or old bed sheet. Don’t forget the usual safety precautions: dust mask and gloves.

2. Put the mesh panel in the middle of the drop sheet and using your spray paint, spray from side to side.

3. Give it a chance to dry and then you are done. Either hang it up using your 3M hooks or you can lean it against the wall above your desk.

4. Grab your photos and some pegs and go for it.
