Seven out of 10 Australians believe same sex couples should be allowed to marry. And yet Australian law says they can’t.
This ad, by Australian Marriage Equality and Get Up, brought together a “mega-mob” of 250 volunteers to show the statistics of marriage equality in Australia.
It’s powerful.
Mia went along to the shoot. Take a look here. (And remember to share it with all your friends).
We also featured the clip on episode 10 of Mamamia on Sky News.

I don't either. Lets look at our common human experience.'
Marriage is not a fad to be cut to shape according to social whim. The father of modern anthropology, Claude Levi-Strauss, called marriage "a social institution with a biological foundation." Marriage throughout history is society's effort to reinforce this biological reality: male, female, offspring. All our ceremonies and laws exist to buttress nature helping bind a man to his mate for the sake of the child they might create' quote from Dr David van Gend
Actually, I think marriage throughout history is male-dominated society's effort to reinforce patriarchy and the protection of property (including women). Most marriages that I am familiar with are based on love - this is the basis for many a modern marriage. Some heterosexual couples get married and don't want to have children. Some heterosexual couples get married and can't have children. Does this make their marriages any less real or valid than those that include children? Or do you really only have a problem with gay people getting married. Homophobia is a terrible affliction, but one that can be treated with compassion and acceptance. Look outside yourself and your own experiences and try to imagine the anguish, frustration and pure unfairness that comes with being denied the rights other Australians take for granted, simply becasue of your sexuality. Yours is a religious argument and, thankfully, we live in a country where church and state are separate, as they should be. Unless you can come up with a legitimate, rational argument for why gay people should not be allowed to marry, there is no debate.
I don't. This has nothing to do with equality and everything to do with making a mockery of marriage between a man and a woman. Same sex marriage does not make any sense. You cannot make normal what is not normal. How can you have a wife without a husband or vice versa? Please, this is ajoke gone too far.
"This has nothing to do with equality and everything to do with making a mockery of marriage between a man and a woman."
I'm sorry Anonymous but you are wrong, wrong, wrong. This issue has Everything to do with equality and Nothing to do with the marriages between men and women. How does a gay couple getting married have anything to do with a straight couples' marriage? Allowing gay people to marry will have absolutely no effect on the marriages of straight people. I wish the religious groups and right-wingers would stop making this all about themselves - it isn't, it's about the rights of gay people. It is so frustrating that this is even called a 'debate', it isn't, it's an infringment of civil rights being upheld by law and it's despicable. When gay people are allowed to marry in Australia - and believe me, the day will come - we will look back and wonder what all the fuss was about. The current situation makes me embarrassed to be an Australian. I support the right of every person to debate and have their view heard, but come on, let's get real and demonstrate what is great about Australia and stop being so conservative.
I think the ad was beautiful. Stop hating and show some love <3
