Kate Middleton is a YouTube star now.

Have you ever heard Kate Middleton speak? Now you can. Thanks to this children’s mental health public service announcement.

Today we realised something – we’ve seen countless pictures and footage of the Duchess of Cambridge, but we rarely actually hear her speak. That’s about to change, as the Duchess puts her voice behind a very important cause.

Kate Middleton is campaigning for better mental health support for children, and she’s done it via YouTube address.

All of this means that, yes, you hear her (lovely and toney British) voice AND witness her getting passionate about a topic that’s close to her heart. Today is a good day.

The Duchess has been royal patron of the charity Place2Be (which helps to provide emotional support to children in schools) since 2013.

In her address, set in a classroom at Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital School in Beckenham, south London, Kate speaks about why addressing the mental health issues facing children is so important:

‘Through Place2Be I have seen the benefits of offering children support for their mental health in the safety of the school environment. Both William and I sincerely believe that early action can prevent problems in childhood from turning into larger ones later in life.’

The Duchess of Cambridge is passionate about children’s health.

The public service announcement comes during the UK’s first ever Children’s Mental Health Week, and with Kate due to give birth to her second child in April, the topic couldn’t be more apt.

“Both William and I have seen that many young people are struggling to cope with the impact of bullying, bereavement, domestic violence, family breakdown and more, without support the effects of these challenges can be traumatic leading to serious issues such as anxiety, depression, addiction and self harm,” Kate says.

“We need to help young people and their parents understand that it’s not a sign of weakness to ask to help. A child’s mental health is just as important to their physical health and deserves the same quality of support. No one would feel embarrassed about seeking help for a child if they broke their arm, and we really should be equally ready to support a child coping with emotional difficulties.”

Nice one, K-Middy. She might be fairly camera-shy most of the time, but the impact of this important message coming straight from her is totally worth becoming a YouTube sensation for.
