Jonathan Rhys Meyers is used to having his photo taken. That doesn’t make this OK.
As the new spy thriller Damascus Cover was being presented to the world at the Cannes Film Festival this week, its star was being “papped” on the streets of London.
Far from the glamour of the South of France, a barely recognisable Jonathan Rhys Meyers sipped from one of the two bottles of spirits he had just purchased at a convenience store, in broad daylight.
How do we know this?
A photographer was there to capture the moment his distinctive lips curled around a vodka bottle lid, which he used as a shot glass as he walked down the street.
The Hollywood heartthrob could easily be mistaken for a homeless person.
His jacket is inside out, his fly undone and he has the tell-tale marks of spilled vodka dribbled down his t-shirt.
These photos are desperately, desperately sad.
And we are not showing them to you.
Instead, try these non-papped shots of Jonathan Rhys Meyers (post continues after gallery):
When I saw them on the Daily Mail website today, I immediately thought of all the possible alternative reasons why the Golden Globe winner may have been photographed in such a state (perhaps subconsciously trying to quiet the uneasiness I felt by viewing them).
Maybe he was coming from a bucks’ party?
Maybe, like me only two hours ago, he was out in public unwashed and unkempt because his shower was being renovated?
But as more and more details from the photos registered, the reason for my discomfort became increasingly obvious.

I absolutely agree. Many times I've thought about how hard my own struggles with alcohol are, self-pity blah blah blah, but what in the world would I do if my failures (time and again) were dissected by the world? These stars are legally abused. I do not know of many paparazzi being punished by the legal system, but if someone constantly yelled abusive things at me, my friends would suggest I be on my way to the woman's shelter. Instead, the paparazzi are paid beau coup bucks! I am not sure I could recover from something like this. God be with Jonathon and all people who are in active addiction.
Emily Purcell, you can't see me right now, but I am clapping. You are 100% right. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Rhys Meyers at the Irish Post Awards in Oct 2014. A more generous or humble man, star or not, you could never hope to meet. He is not like the "average " movie star, preferring to stay out of the lime light, rather than in it. Millions of his adoring fans were shocked, appalled, and fearful...for Jonny, as he his affectionately called by his fans. Alcoholism, like any addiction, is not a pretty one when in the thralls of it. The images of these photos will never be erased from our minds. Nor, if anyone has thought of it, his Fathers, brothers, sisters, or nephews.
And then there is Mr. Rhys Meyers himself. Without question, he himself had to be aghast at the photos. But true to his class and style, appeared days later, walking down his city street with groceries. He, more than anyone, is aware of his addiction, and I am positive he will start the good fight all over again, as sadly, anyone who is an addict knows that it is an on going battle. We can only pray that he makes the right decision, and that those who love and care for him will be there for him. His fans world wide immediately took to twitter posting positive photos of him with enduring words using the #jonathanrhysmeyers. In 2 days there were over 6700 tweets, and the campaign is still going on.
Myself, I hope there is a special place in hell for this photographer. Wonder how his family, or himself, would react if he were caught on the street like this and his image were flashed on the front pages of News rags everywhere.
Your fans have faith in you Jonathan, and will support you in whatever you decide to do.
