“Live in poverty close to the city, or move further out and spend hours commuting.”
Let’s play a game of “Would You Rather?”
Like you used to play in high school. You know, like, “Would you rather accidentally catch your parents having sex, or have to jump in a cage full of piranhas?”
That is what the rental situation in Australian cities is beginning to feel like. Only this time, we’re choosing between long and expensive commutes to work, or workshopping dinners based on baked beans six nights a week. Poor or far. Pick your poison.
And Sydney is the toughest of the lot. That was the bottom line of the Sydney Morning Herald article this morning discussing the outrageous rental prices in inner-city Sydney. Hardly inspiring, the article confirms what I have long suspected: it’s not me, it’s them.
After spending around six years renting in Melbourne, the prices of similar housing here in Sydney was a shock to the system. At almost twice the price of what I was paying before, it wasn’t really clear what the price hike was about. Was it because we were closer to the equator? Were there flecks of gold available for sifting in a backyard stream? Wait, did we even have a backyard?
Like most of our Aussie cities, the inner city housing was typified by old (“character-filled”) multi-story houses — think rambling terraces with slightly musty bathrooms and dark bedrooms, pokey kitchens, and tiny staircases that make visually impaired people like myself clammy with fear.

I'm trying to find a place to live in Newcastle and the application process is killing me! They want every single detail of your life and SO many references! and rental checks with old agents..... I'm going mad! it takes hours and hours to fill out these application forms only to have no response for weeks or constant rejections; I have been trying to get in contact with my current agent in Canberra for MONTHS, how are they going to get a proper rental reference from her if I can't even get in contact with her? I have a 5 year old and a dog, I'm on single parenting payments and its impossible to find a place to live.
I live 40k from the Melbourne CBD and it used to take me an hour by train peak hour express. I used to take a book or mag and enjoy relaxing before work and after on the train, no biggie. Three and a half hours to travel 50k by public transport sounds ridiculous, or very bad public transport in Sydney.
Without kids it may be a bit easier- But when you are zoned for a local school and work 50k away because you cant lose the job that pays the rent and that one day you will climb the ladder and get a better wage, but you struggle to get to and from work whilst juggling before and after school care (not to mention the "your child is sick" phone calls!).
cant use public transport - apart from the time it takes, a good 50% of the time it doesn't even show up!
Yep, would never have done it with young kids, I was lucky enough to get a transfer closer to home after maternity leave finished.
