“We’ve always known you’re kind of a sociopath.”
James Fallon is relatively unassuming guy. He’s charming. He was voted the class clown in highschool, and went on his first date when he was 12 years old. That girl went on to become his wife. Fallon, a neuroscientist of 40 years, is the last person you would expect to have the brain of a psychopathic killer, except- he does.
Fallon’s usual area of neuroscience expertise was chemical connections of the brain and adult stem cell research. That is, until some of his colleagues, who worked in psychology and radiology introduced him to a new technology. The PET scan. (It was the 1990s). Fallon described the machine as, “a candy dispenser… It was love at first sight.’

This guy was interviewed on SBS insight. I'm sure you will be able to find the interview on the SBS website. It was quite interesting and he does seem likeable, but some experts questioned whether he really is a psychopath.
I was thinking the other day that a lot of compassion is choice, you watch some horrible war scene or famine on the news and just sit eating your dinner no effect, because you don't allow it to affect you because otherwise you would break down with all the bad news in the world, but at other times you actually allow yourself to feel it and maybe have a little cry. I really don't know if I believe in this idea of the born psychopath, I think more likely bred, some kids get traumatised and subconsciously decide not to have feelings anymore so they don't get hurt and compassion as a result erodes. It might run in families because if you are brought up by a cold parent then you may model them. But who knows, I don't think science really can say for sure if they are born or bred.
The mere fact that this guy wants to do the right thing (which the experts on insight pointed out) sets him apart from psychopaths.
I hope the headline "I found out I had the brain of a serial killer" was intentional.
A true serial killer would read that headline a bit too literally if you know what I mean. ;o)
