Move over Skippy.
Just when you thought you might have seen one too many cats on the internet, this long-haired tabby entered our newsfeeds and hearts.
Masha, a Russian stray, saved the life of an abandoned baby by crawling into a cardboard box and curling around the baby boy to shield him from freezing temperatures last Saturday. Masha then meowed loudly until help arrived.
Residents of the Obninsk apartment complex where Masha lives found the 12-week-old infant and his feline protector when they heard the cat meowing.
“She is very placid and friendly, so when I heard her meowing, I thought that perhaps she had injured herself,” resident Irina Lavrova told Central European News. “Normally she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby.”
The baby had only been outside for a couple of hours, and was left with nappies and food, according to Lavrova.
He was rushed to the local hospital and a spokesperson said he had not been damaged by the experience.
Meanwhile hero cat is reaping the benefits of being, well, a hero cat.
“Everyone in the block is very proud of her,” Lavrova said. “We have all spoiled her rotten by giving her her favorite food.”
It seems like a tin of Whiskers is a meagre reward for saving a life. This cat needs an agent.
