A message from New York’s top political women to teenage girls: It gets better.
A group of New York’s most powerful women are getting on board Youtube’s #DearMe campaign, where women are encouraged to tell their younger selves something they wish they had known growing up.
The campaign, which was launched on International Women’s Day, aims to remind young girls that the problems they face now – the ones that seem like the end of the world – might not seem like such a big deal in a few years’ time.
Post continues after video:
Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, First Lady Chirlane McCray, Counsel to the Mayor Maya Wiley and Governor Cuomo’s Communications Director Melissa DeRosa are all participating in the campaign, posting videos with advice to empower their younger selves – and anybody else who happens to be watching.

The main message? Stop worrying so much.
“Stop freaking out about every test, and every teacher and every boy.” De Rosa tells the camera.
“Stop worrying that you’re not pretty enough, or not good enough. . . . That boy that you’re so worried about? He doesn’t matter, not even a little bit.”
Now, if only we could go back in time and deliver these thoughtful, mature messages to our teenage selves…
What would your ‘Dear Me’ message to your younger self be?
