Liam Hemsworth is trying to throw everyone off the engagement scent. Fools no one.

So was it a ring with diamonds or a diamond ring?

We all celebrated over the new year as photographs surfaced of pop-superstar Miley Cyrus reunited with her ex-fiance, Australian actor Liam Hemsworth. The couple became engaged in 2012 before breaking up (for the first time) in 2013.

We thought the pair were next in line to the Hollywood Royalty throne. And the pop-culture universe mourned when they split. So when we saw snaps of Miley chilling with the Hemsworth clan in Byron Bay, we jumped for joy.

When Miley was seen once again sporting her engagement ring, we were even more thrilled. And when Miley’s god-mother Dolly Parton, and Liam’s brother Chris Hemsworth commented publicly on the couple’s status (safe to say the next family function was probably a little frosty) we started sketching what we imagined Miley’s wedding leotard would look like.

But when asked about his pending nuptials in an interview with TV Week, Liam said  “I am not engaged, no.”

Wait, what?!

In January a “source” close to the pair told People “Miley is where she has wanted to be for the past two years. Back with Liam and very happy.”

“Miley never wanted to split,” they said. “Things just got so bad that they really needed the break.”

So have the split up (again)? Is it all over? Should we be expecting another chart topping power ballad in the near future? Or are they just holding off on planning their glitter-encrusted beach-side wedding for now?

We’re not sure.

Perhaps we’ll have to wait for another family member to come forward and spill the beans.
