Right now, Miley Cyrus is hosting the VMAs.
But people are still talking about the last time she owned the event.
Miley Cyrus won the hosting gig at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards largely on the strength of her headline-causing performance with Robin Thicke at the event in 2013.
The tongue-and twerk-heavy routine was widely denounced as shocking, pornographic and as racial appropriation. Thousands of headlines, thinkpieces and memes ensued.
Throughout the storm, Cyrus, then 20, copped all the judgement, slut-shaming and derision, while her co-performer, Robin Thicke, then 36, played innocent.
Cyrus told The New York Times that actually, Thicke was well aware of how the performance was going to go down, and that he was the one who approved her nude latex costume.
“It was funny, because I got so much of the heat for it, but that’s just being a woman,” she said.
“He acted like he didn’t know that was going to happen. You were in rehearsals! You knew exactly what was going to happen. And he was actually the one that approved my outfit, so I thought that was very funny. He wanted me as naked as possible, because that’s how his video [for Blurred Lines] was. It was very much a collaboration.”
Cyrus was amazed by the reaction to her performance.
“I didn’t realise I could make such a big reaction. I didn’t think that many people would care. I knew I was famous, but I didn’t know what that meant. Everything was coming to an end and starting a new beginning. In every way,” she said.
The idea to have her back on the stage where the Myth of Miley began was Van Toffler’s. He’s leaving MTV after 28 years of running the company and “can’t get fired,” according to Cyrus.
“He was like, ‘I want to do something crazy — I want you to host the V.M.A.s, because I want that to be my last shebang.'”
We have a feeling she won’t disappoint.

Yes, she is such a shrinking violet, taken advantage by that big meanie Thicke. And he so should have been the one blamed for what she was wearing, quite obviously.
Have you actually seen his music videos and how women are depicted?
Yes. Have you seen hers?
