You may have seen this couple around lately.
Who are they? And why, oh God why, have we made them famous?
Geoffrey Edelsten is an apparently bankrupt, charmless 71-year-old man who once thought it was a good idea to run 24-hour medical centres with chandeliers and mink-covered examination tables. When he was de-registered as a doctor, he bought a football team, started a company, made millions in the ’90s, and finally declared bankruptcy in the US this year.
Gabi Grecko is a buxom 25-year-old woman with no discernible talent other than posing provocatively in leather corsets and “DJ-ing”. She lists her vocation as model/fashion designer.
Last week, moments before this photograph was taken, Edelsten got down on one knee and proposed (for the second time? The third?) to Grecko. She accepted. For reasons unbeknown to me, the nation cared.
Let’s look a little closer at this phenomenon – because I need to understand why these people are everywhere I look. As far as I can tell, there is no rational reason for them to be famous. None. And frankly, I find their omnipresence in the Australian media – yes, including on this site – offensive and exhausting. I don’t like what it suggests about our collective conscience that we’ve elevated these deeply mediocre human beings to a position of any influence whatsoever.

I feel a slight amusement at these people. I love seeing how this "showman" works. He is shameless. She is basically his employee (and I wouldn't be surprised if he had her as a "business expense" on his tax return). I don't buy the whole "I'm so lost and a bit stupid" face that his women show. They are just as savvy as him-they know what they can achieve just by being with him-even if they sell their souls a little.
People often say that he is bankrupt-I for one don't believe this. Wealthy people know all the loopholes of how to remain wealthy without actually "earning" any money. For example-he may have overseas bank accounts; he may have opened companies in Trust form (where all the money he earns goes into the Trust and he allocates a small income for himself, therefor HE doesn't earn the money-the trust does and the government can't get his money); he may do leases on his assets (cars etc). So many different things...
He is a very smart man-slimy-but always remember-if no one paid attention to him he would go away-it is in his and his people's best interest to remain in the spotlight. He has a hell of a good publicist, PR representative and agent. As soon as a story comes up about him or his "fiancee", we might read it, simply for the entertaiment factor (I'm sure that he even got the ring for cheap in turn for naming the designer).
I remember when he married Brynne-all the guests posed in front of a "sponsors" wall-they paid for wedding- not him. This should say it all. It's all smokes and mirrors. In turn all the people around him earn their money and so does he. Who knows, maybe he has an agreement with magazines (even online ones!), newspapers etc. You rub my back and I rub yours...
See it for what it is...
Warnie, cover my palm in silver and I'll show you your future.
