A Brooklyn mother’s Facebook post has gone viral, after she responded with a “FUKKK THAT” to the claim that children hold back women in the art world.
Well-known Serbian performance artist, Marina Abramovic, told Artnet News that female artists aren’t as successful as men because of their commitment to their children.
“I had three abortions because I was certain that it would be a disaster for my work,” she said.
In response US artist, Hein Koh, posted a photo of herself breastfeeding five-week-old twins – while working on a laptop.
“I was still getting shit done,” she said.
“All Marina knows is her own experience, and it may be true for her, but that is not everyone’s experience nor truth,” she added.
Koh said becoming a mother had helped her become a better artist.
“I learned to be extremely efficient with my time, prioritize what’s important and let go of the rest, and multitask like a champ.”
Like many mothers, Koh says she has survived on little sleep, coped with chaos and raw emotions while discovering a new side to herself.
“It’s important to think about the ways in which these challenges can help you move forward, rather than hold you back.”
Koh’s post has over 6,000 likes and been shared thousands of times.

What an awesome pic! What a champion mumma!
I don't know Marina but what she coming from a cultural perspective of women being expected to be primary care givers, hence the "burden" of having children limiting career progress?? Not knowledgeable in the art world so just putting out the question so others who know the answer can enlighten me. I only know two Serbian families and there is a distinct gender division in family responsibilities.
