Celine Dion has reached out to her fans, thanking them for their support following the funeral of her late husband, Rene Angelil.
In a statement released on her website and social media pages, she wrote:
“My family and I are deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support from so many people who have touched our lives during these past few days. We have felt your love for René, and your prayers and compassion have helped us during this most difficult time… more than you’ll ever know. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I would also like to sincerely thank the Quebec Government for honoring René with National Funerals as well as the many individuals and organizations who came together to hold such a beautiful tribute in his name.
We will never forget all of the kindness that you have bestowed upon us.”
Rene’s funeral was televised in Canada and streamed online. Celine and Rene’s 15 year old son, Rene-Charles, gave a touching speech to honour his father.
He said that although he didn’t know his father for long, he has great memories that he will be able to share with his younger brothers Nelson and Eddy.
“You are a tough act to follow, but with your help everything is going to be fine. Dad, I promise you here that we are all going to live up to your standards.”
Rene Angelil discovered Celine Dion when she was 12, after her siblings sent him a recording of her singing. They officially began dating when Celine was 19 and married in 1994.
In 1998, however, Angelil was diagnosed with throat cancer, and Dion paused her career in order to focus on her family. Although Angelil was declared cancer-free in 2000, it returned in 2013 and on January 14 this year, Celine Dion and her children said goodbye to Rene.
