Sara Donaldson’s charmed life is well documented on her Instagram feed – photos of her posing in beautiful locations with luxury goods, expensive clothes, sports cars and jets.
The 25-year-old is not a rock star or a famous actress, she is the new breed of advertiser.
Carving out a niche in the online world with her blog Harper and Harley, the Brisbane marketing graduate with an interest in fashion has caught the eye of big brands.
The blog has 70,000 monthly readers and her Instagram and Facebook accounts have over 700,000 followers between them.
She started the blog seven years ago as an outlet for her interest in fashion with no idea it could become a business.
But blogging and social media marketing are not only now a business, they are a big and rapidly growing sector.

I don't knowwww, I see all the influencers, and it's just so damn obvious that the lipstick shade they're raving about was given to them, like cash for comments, it just doesn't feel right. I know all advertising is made up of paid actors but there's something really icky about reading someone's utter BS on their Instagram feed. It seems like such blatant lies, it deters me if anything I must be abnormal though I guess !
I feel the same way. Influencers put me off. At least regular advertisements are up-front about the fact they involve paid actors/models. "creating content" is a euphemism for making an ad that pretends it is not an ad. It must be exhausting trying to be an "influencer", making sure every aspect of your life is "on brand", and every opportunity to cash in is utilised. Actors and models get to "switch off" once the ad is made/the job is over. Influencers choose a "job" that makes other peoples "likes" a primary factor in what they do/wear/how they live their day to day lives. I am actually repelled by the idea of trying to emulate someone who doesn't actually make basic decisions about their own life based on what they do or don't like, but bases them on maintaining an illusion and other peoples clicks/likes/approval.
