It’s saucy, it’s dramatic, and it’s inspired by the murky social waters of Sydney’s North Shore.
The first trailer for Big Little Lies — the new HBO series based off the bestselling book by Sydney author Liana Moriarty — is finally here. And we couldn’t be more excited.
The story follows the lives of a group of mothers whose seemingly perfect lives hide some dark secrets.
The series, which moves the story’s setting from Sydney to California, is jam-packed with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars: Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard, and Laura Dern to name a few.
Listen: Mia Freedman interviewed Liane Moriarty for her No Filter podcast. (Post continues after audio.)
Moriarty rose to fame after Big Little Lies debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list in 2014, making her the first Australian author to achieve the top spot for a debut.
The book was revered for its brilliant wit, sharp characterisations, and the drama. OH. THE. DRAMA.
The trailer looks just as intense with quick cuts, steamy sex scenes, and mums trying to do the right thing.
The seven-part series is set to be released in 2017.

Brilliant Book! If you have not read it, please do, you won't regret it! Bit sad, though, it relocated the story from Australia to America, especially as it had an Australian Actress pushing for it to be filmed - why did Nicole Kidman not want this to be filmed in Australia? It would have been a wonderful showcase of Sydney! Ah well, the American market will like it better, just a missed opportunity for Australia. Well done Liane Moriarty!
Agreed, would have been great set where it was supposed to, but it will get more attention if it's geared more to an American audience. I'm looking forward to seeing it - the trailer doesn't give much away!
