Modern Family’s Ariel Winter has won emancipation from her estranged mother.
It’s been a long and ugly battle.
Ariel Winter, 17, has been trying to legally break-free from her allegedly abusive mother for almost three years. The custody battle for the actress has been ongoing between her mother, Chrisoula Workman and her sister, Shanelle Gray since 2012, after Gray applied for custody of Winter.
NY Daily News reports the application included allegations that Workman was an unfit mother who slapped and insulted Winter.
More on that here: Modern Family star’s mum starved her.
The pair’s trouble allegedly began due to Workman’s disapproval of Winter’s (then 14) 18-year-old boyfriend, Cameron Palatas.
Winter took to Twitter to share her joy at being legally emancipated from her mother.
“I’m officially emancipated!!!” she said, before thanking her father, who had been controlling the 17-year-old’s finances, and her sister Shanelle Gray for their “special support.”
We are glad Ariel Winter is happy with her decision and wish her all the best with her fresh start.

I don't know their situation. If the mother was abusive then she had every right to fight for emancipation. All i know is as a mother myself, i think i would probably die if my daughter turned on me, but then again i wouldn't abuse her either.
